This Girl is on Fire!!!

This girl is on fire!

She's walking on fire!

This girl is on fire!

Love, love, love this dress! I used the Collette Laurel again. I really like this pattern. It's simple and comfy. Plus, I've already altered the fit, and it doesn't hurt that there's a contest going on ;)

I used this pretty stretch velvet that I've had in my stash for YEARS. I loved how it looked like flames, but I just never knew what to do with it. Wow! Does it make a good dress or what?

In keeping with my theme of trying new things with this simple dress pattern, I used one the "wavy" decorative stitch on my machine to make a 7 inch border on the bottom with metallic thread. I switched between a gold and silver metallic to make a flame pattern. The effect is really spectacular. It appears different in different lightings. In darker light (see the pictres with me in the dress), it looks the bottom of the dress has a different texture. In full sun, the light really catches the metallic thread and the flames pop out. I love it! I only wish I could have taken a picture of myself in the dress in full sun (the sun just wouldn't cooperate that day!).

And I know, I'm sewing a winter weather dress....in April....in Texas. But every single year when February rolls around and it gets cold, I wish that I had more winter clothes. I never sew them though, because it's already so late and I think, "Well, I'll just get to it next year." Pshh, like that every happens. I'm a master at procrastination. So now I can look forward to next year. At least the weather cooperated and a cold front came through for pictures, so it was semi-cold. Yay!

She's just a girl and she's on fire.

Suit and (bow) Tie

I'm going to make an effort to put more of the stuff I've sewn in the past on the blog. Yay for effort!

A couple of months ago, we had a wedding and an anniversary party to attend. Since little man had outgrown his old suit, I whipped up another one. I finally got pictures of him in it.

The pants are the Little Heartbreaker from the book Sewing for Boys by Shelly Figueroa. I had to turn the cuff to the inside and tack it up because they were a little bit too long on him. The vest is from Burda 9781. Bow tie is from prudent baby. Shirt is McCalls 6016.

The contrast fabric is Ahoy Matey by Alexander Henry. The buttons are from Shelly's Buttons.

Love this kid!

Patchwork Laurel

Lately, I've been inspired by patchwork dresses. I decided to attempt something similar for my first laurel.

Pretty!

Also Pretty!
I pieced together the front of the dress using the free Rhythm and Blues quiting pattern found here: http://www.redroosterfabrics.com/contentmgr/showdetails.php/id/7367.

Isn't this awesome?

It's my first time piecing anything together, so I'm pround of it. But it took FOR-EV-ER!!! Seriously, I have a new found respect for quilters. I made a total of 15 quilt blocks (Is that what you call them?) and used that to cut out the front pattern piece. I basically treated this mini quilt like a piece of fabric. I used a more "plain" quilting cotton for the back.

Cutting out the front pattern piece.

I hand stitched the beaded neckline trim in place.

This neckline looks familiar...

I used this lovely machine stitch for the hem. Isn't it pretty! I love it.

Yay! Hem!
 It's a bold dress. I guess it's a good thing I'm not shy!

Why am I always making such goofy faces in pictures?
